Have you ever been in a situation where someone made you feel like your English was “not good enough”? Has there been a time when you felt reluctant to participate fully in a conversation or feared that no one would understand you? Where do these messages come from and how can we address them?
In this interactive session, we will discuss our identities and inner thoughts as they relate to communicating in English as an additional language (EAL). The workshop will cover topics such as the importance of global Englishes, accents, and dialects; the benefits of multilingualism in academic learning; and translanguaging (i.e. switching between two or multiple languages) as a valid practice for strengthening your EAL skills. We will also talk about how to challenge some of the external factors and dynamics that can negatively impact confidence.
As IFP students at the University of Toronto, this in-person workshop is aimed at you as a multilingual student here! You will have opportunities to raise issues important to you and see yourself belonging within UofT.

As an international student working at the University of Toronto – and using English as an additional language (EAL) – you might feel added pressures regarding your performance or have feelings of self-doubt. Some call this feeling like an “imposter”: feeling that you do not belong at university and everyone else is smarter than you.
In this workshop we will discuss some of the common ways that stress and feeling like an imposter can occur for students. We will explore:
- How “thinking traps” that can lead negative self-talk and self-doubt
- How your sense of your identity can affect your cognitive patterns
- How microaggressions (i.e. subtle or not-subtle statements of discrimination) might affect you and how to respond to them
As an international student at the IFP, you will come away from this in-person workshop with strategies for self-empowerment and building a network of connections (personal and academic) so you can thrive.
