The International English Program offers a variety of Morning and Afternoon Courses that are designed to meet the educational goals of students of all English abilities, from beginner to university level. Although it is not required, students are encouraged to take both a Morning Course and an Afternoon Course to maximize their learning experience.

The General English Course offers daily classes led by fully-accredited English language teachers that develop all aspects of students’ English language abilities, including: speaking, listening, writing, reading, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation. The aim of the course is to help students improve their confidence, fluency, and accuracy through a variety of communicative activities, such as collaborative projects, discussions, and presentations. Students are encouraged throughout the course to share their own knowledge and experience in the classroom. 

General English classes focus on learning grammar and vocabulary by communicating with others. Students wishing additional practice with general conversation and pronunciation have the option of taking an afternoon speaking class.

GEC is designed for students:

  • Who are looking to develop all aspects of their English abilities: speaking, listening, writing, reading, and vocabulary
  • Who are looking to improve their confidence, fluency, and grammatical accuracy
  • At any English level – from beginner to advanced

Evaluation and Certificate

At the end of the General English Course, students receive a personalized evaluation and those who succeed are rewarded a certificate of course completion from University of Toronto, New College.

In order to receive a program certificate, students must:

  • actively participate in class activities and discussions.
  • show improved fluency and accuracy over the course of the program.
  • complete their final project, as well as any assigned homework, to the satisfaction of the teacher.

Class Placement

All IEP classes are assigned based on the results of our written test and a one-to-one interview with a teacher. Students should understand that there is no pre-determined cutoff for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels: students will be grouped with others of similar experience, based on the abilities they show on the test.

Business Experience: Not Required

English for Global Business is designed for people who wish to become more comfortable using English in their current job or who are interested in a business-related career where English will be used. This course provides practice with everyday professional activities such as communicating effectively, organizing and participating in meetings, giving presentations, and intercultural competence. Our curriculum includes listening and reading tasks, but the primary focus is on communication. 

EGB is designed for students:

  • With an intermediate or higher level of English
  • Who have recently entered the working world and know that they will need English in their future career
  • Who wish to become more comfortable using English at work or are planning on a business career
  • Who would like to develop fluency and confidence in everyday business English
  • Who need practice in making introductions, telephone and face-to-face conversations, participating in meetings, making presentations, writing effective emails, and intercultural business communication

At the end of the English for Global Business Course, students receive a personalized evaluation and those who succeed are rewarded a certificate of course completion from University of Toronto, New College.

In order to receive a program certificate, students must:

Our Academic English Course (AEC) is designed for students who wish to develop essential skills for success at a university where English is used as the language of instruction. This course uses content primarily from the social sciences to practice transferable skills that apply to multiple undergraduate programs. The curriculum focuses on using academic language through critical reading, lecture content, seminar participation, and research skills to become well-prepared for university study in English. 

AEC is designed for students:

  • who wish to develop the essential skills for success at an English-speaking university
  • who wish to study in a challenging environment
  • who are looking to develop skills in critical reading, oral presentation, seminar discussion, note taking, essay writing, and research

Evaluation and Certificate

At the end of the Academic English Course, students receive a personalized evaluation and those who succeed are rewarded a certificate of course completion from University of Toronto, New College.

The Speaking & Society Course is intended for students who want extended practice with expressing themselves in English and engaging with others about a variety of social issues in today’s connected world. Through this structured opportunity to interact with others regardless of proficiency in a multicultural environment, this course is a stepping stone between level-specific general English classes and real-world language experience. In it, you will develop your fluency, confidence, and variety of ways to express ideas about meaningful topics affecting our societies.   

 SSC is designed for students:

  • of all English levels, from beginner to advanced
  • who would like to improve their ability to communicate in English
  • who would like to develop skills in pronunciation, listening and conversation
  • Who needs practice in delivering oral presentations and participating in group discussions

 

Evaluation and Certificate

At the end of the Speaking & Society course, students receive a personalized evaluation and those who succeed are rewarded a certificate of course completion from University of Toronto, New College.

In order to receive a program certificate, students must:

  • actively participate in class activities.
  • show improved fluency over the course of the program.
  • complete a short final project (such as a presentation or interview) to the satisfaction of the teacher.

Class Placement

Students are assigned to Speaking & Society classes based on the recommendation of the teacher who interviews them on the first day. There is no predetermined cutoff for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels: students will be grouped with others of similar experience.

The IELTS Preparation Course (IPC) is designed for intermediate and advanced students who plan to study at an English language university and who will need to take the IELTS Academic Test. Throughout the course, students learn strategies and develop the skills necessary for success on the test. Practice tests are used throughout the program. This course is best be paired with the Academic English Course.  

Please note that this course is highly focused on test preparation and may not be suitable for students who do not intend to take the IELTS test in the near future.

IPC is designed for students:

  • with an intermediate or advanced level of English
  • who intend to take the IELTS Academic Test in the near future
  • who plan to study in an English speaking country and want to prepare for the IELTS
  • who needs practice in test-taking strategies and develop the skills necessary for success on the IELTS

Evaluation and Certificate

At the end of the IELTS Preparation Course, students receive a personalized evaluation and those who succeed are rewarded a certificate of course completion from University of Toronto, New College.

In order to receive an IEP course certificate, students must:

  • actively participate in class activities and practice tests.
  • complete the final practice IELTS test.

Class Placement
