A Pathway to the University of Toronto for International Students

The International Foundation Program (IFP) is a unique offering that combines conditional acceptance to the University of Toronto with intensive English language instruction and academic skills development instruction, combined with for-credit courses. The IFP is available to academically qualified international students whose English proficiency score do not meet the University of Toronto’s direct entrance requirements.

Successful completion of the IFP guarantees admission to the Faculty of Arts & Science, the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design, or the Faculty of Music.

The IFP’s innovative format merges undergraduate university courses with intensive English language training and support. Designed for international students who need to improve their English fluency before undertaking the rigour of a full-time undergraduate degree, the IFP develops skills in genuine academic contexts. The integration of English language learning with a first-year university course allows participants to work on the specific skills that they will need as full-time undergraduate students at the University of Toronto.

The Summer IFP is only available for students who meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Have already graduated from high school, with no post-secondary education
    (Students must have a complete and final transcript, including proof of high school graduation)
  • Meet the English proficiency requirements for Summer IFP
  • Meet the academic requirements for admission

Students cannot apply directly for the Summer IFP – students will be considered for both the Fall/Winter IFP and the Summer IFP based on their complete academic history, English Proficiency test scores and on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the Faculty.

The Summer IFP is an 8-week intensive program designed for first-year students whose language proficiency scores are insufficient for direct entry to the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design, and require additional academic support in transitioning from high school to their first year studies at the University of Toronto.

Faculty of Arts & Science (excluding Rotman Commerce)

The Summer IFP is an 8-week intensive program designed for first-year students whose language proficiency scores are insufficient for direct entry to the Faculty of Arts & Science (excluding Rotman Commerce), and require additional academic support in transitioning from high school to their first year studies at the University of Toronto.

Faculty of Music

The Summer IFP is an 8-week intensive program designed for first-year students whose language proficiency scores are insufficient for direct entry to the Faculty of Music, and require additional academic support in transitioning from high school to their first year studies at the University of Toronto.
