IFP’s Dr. Alexandra Guerson is the 2020-2021 recipient of the June Larkin Award
The International Programs team would like to congratulate Dr. Alexandra Guerson on receiving the 2020-21 June Larkin Award for Pedagogical Development! Dr. Guerson is receiving the award for her proposed project “Creating a Community of Care in an Online Course,” where she developed a Quercus template that instructors can easily adapt to different courses and create a community of care in an online or hybrid course environment. The project, based on Dr. Guerson’s personal practice, research of existing literature and student focus groups, also takes into account mindful practices, exercises that enhance mental wellbeing, and communication strategies to improve relations and connections between instructors and students.
Dr. Alexandra Guerson has been with the International Programs team since 2010 and has been teaching Themes in World History in the International Foundation Program (IFP) since then. She also has an extensive education history, including a PhD in History & Jewish Studies (University of Toronto) and two undergraduate degrees in Law (University of Rio de Janeiro) and History (Concordia University).
What is the June Larkin Award?
“This award provides for a half-course release for a member of New College faculty to develop innovative pedagogy or educational technology for use in classroom, community or field settings, and/or online teaching and learning. The pedagogical contribution should be sustainable and have professional development value that can be shared with the College as a whole.
Proposals might include: learning and implementing new educational technologies; developing online teaching tools; designing creative teaching and learning methodologies; researching student development to inform teaching and learning practice; or undertaking professional development with potential benefit to colleagues.”
