The Virtual International Summer Academy will be offering 3 one-week courses: IELTS Online Intensive Course, Global Citizenship Challenge, and Discussions Without Borders. These courses are designed for students ages 15 to 18 with a strong level of English. Each course will be offered on multiple dates.

The Global Citizenship Challenge is a one-week intensive experience in team-building and problem-solving for motivated students aged 15-17 ready to take on real-world problems. Guided by program instructors, participants will study essential principles of teamwork and design thinking. Then, working in teams of three to five, they will apply this knowledge to create their own solutions to an unsolved problem affecting our global community. Students are supported throughout the course by real-time interaction with instructors and facilitators. At the end of the course, students will present their solutions to program staff, community leaders, and family and friends. 

This course is offered online. Students are expected to attend a three-hour live class, about half of which is spent working in a smaller group. Those who participate in all classes and contribute to the final presentation will receive a certificate of completion.  

Global Citizenship Challenge participants should be prepared to work with their instructors and teams on Zoom via video in English. Students should have an English language level of CEFR upper B1/IELTS 5 in order to order to feel comfortable participating in this program.       

This course is designed for:

  • Students who are passionate about the global community and would like to take the discussion further with like-minded individuals from around the globe.
  • Students who were originally planning on attending the Global Citizenship Program. This is a great look into what the full program would look like!

The IELTS Online Intensive 1 course offers one-week of intensive training for students interested in taking the IELTS test (Academic). This course is suitable both for students with previous IELTS experience and for those new to the test. Students will review the test components and question types and learn strategies for success through three hours of daily practice with qualified and experienced IELTS instructors. Individualized feedback and score estimations on two complete speaking and writing sections will be offered, and students will have access to extensive online resources for additional practice. By the end of the course, students should be familiar with all aspects of the test and know what they need to do to improve their score.  

This course is offered online. Students are expected to participate in a three-hour live class and do a small amount of daily preparation outside of class time. Those who complete all in-class work will receive a certificate of course completion. Supplemental daily practice will be provided and is encouraged.  

The IELTS Online Intensive requires daily writing and speaking practice with both instructors and other students. A language level of CEFR upper B1/IELTS 5 is recommended in order to benefit fully from the course.    

This course is designed for:

  • Students who are seeking personalized feedback on their test performance
  • Students who benefit from a small group class setting
  • Students looking for guided practice exercises to increase their IELTS test performance

IELTS Online Intensive 2 offers additional practice and feedback for students who have completed IELTS Online Intensive 1, and who wish to put more time into developing the skills they need most. The focus is on putting the learning from IELTS 1 into practice, with particular emphasis on writing and speaking. This course is ideal for students who will be taking the IELTS test in the near future and are looking for focused practice and coaching on particular areas of the test. 

This course is offered online. Students are expected to participate in a three-hour live class and do a small amount of daily preparation outside of class time. Those who complete all in-class work will receive a certificate of course completion. Supplemental daily practice will be provided and is encouraged.  

The IELTS Online Intensive requires daily writing and speaking practice with both instructors and other students. A language level of CEFR upper B1/IELTS 5 is recommended in order to benefit fully from the course.    

This course is designed for:

  • Students who have completed IELTS1 and is looking for additional practice
  • Students who are seeking personalized feedback on their test performance
  • Students who benefit from a small group class setting
  • Students looking for guided practice exercises to increase their IELTS test performance

Discussions Without Borders offers participants the chance to engage in casual conversation with students from around the world in a supportive, inclusive and diverse environment. The class will open with structured discussion activities led by an instructor from UofT’s International Programs. Students will then move to breakout rooms to take the conversation in their own direction, and will be joined by a UofT student facilitator. Discussion topics will be chosen based on general interest, and student suggestions are welcomed. The maximum class size is 12 students. An individualized speaking level assessment can be provided if the student requests it.

 

This course is offered online. To benefit from the course, students will need to participate in a 90-minute live class and converse with both instructors and peers. A language level of CEFR B1/IELTS 4.5 is recommended in order to feel comfortable participating in Discussions Without Borders.

  • Students who are seeking conversation practice in a guided environment
  • Students who benefit from small group sizes
  • Students looking to connect with other individuals around the world!
